Sonic Cartography: Mapping the Hidden Depths
and Cosmic Heights of Imaginary Horizons 2
Listening to Imaginary Horizons 2 feels like rediscovering a rare "Headphone Masterpiece" from the back bin of a 1970s record shop—the kind of album that promises a journey and actually delivers one. Dino Pacifici and Brannan Lane have moved beyond mere atmosphere, crafting a 12-track narrative that feels as much like a speculative sci-fi broadcast as it does a modern ambient suite. While the duo is credited as co-composers, the album thrives on a distinct division
of labor that honors their individual strengths. Lane, acting as the atmospheric architect, provides the rhythmic "foundation tracks"—the pulsing heartbeats and sequencers that keep the journey on course—while Pacifici layers a sophisticated array of analog and digital synthesis, acting as the lead sound designer and mixing engineer. Together with mastering by Dionisaf and striking cover art by Wayfarer Owner/President Dieter Spears, they have created a work that is both technically pristine and emotionally resonant.
The experience is a palpable migration that begins in the shimmering heights of "Glow Of The Seven Sisters." Here, Pacifici utilizes high-frequency "shimmers"—synths that possess the crystalline clarity of windchimes—occupying a wide panoramic space that echoes into the distance. This brightness is anchored by a foundational, low-pitched drone, setting a cosmic tone that quickly descends into a more claustrophobic, terrestrial environment.

As the listener
moves into "Seabed" and "Underwater," the duo employs low-pass filters to create a "submerged" frequency response, rolling off the high-end to mimic the literal pressure of the deep. A haunting, filtered voice clearly states, "We are underwater," amidst beeping tones reminiscent of vintage sci-fi consoles and a grainy layer of white noise that suggests a radio signal struggling against the density of the ocean.
This aquatic immersion reaches its peak in "Primordial Pools," where a heavy, deep-seated drone gives way to an urgent bass pattern and chanting that feels like the very spark of life. However, as the sequence moves through "Cold Fusion" and "Boiling Point," the mood shifts from natural discovery to a quiet, mechanical urgency. In "Cold Fusion," a sequencer mimics a machine going through a cycle while a spectral vocal note fadesin and out, suggesting the invisible power of the atomic age. This tension reaches a "Boiling Point" marked by electronic horns and soft, bongo-like percussion, hinting at a tipping point for a planet under pressure.
It is here that the narrative gaze turns back toward the heavens out of necessity. In "Background Radiation," Pacifici’s wavering, filtered synths evoke the radio telescopes of Contact, scanning the stars for a new sanctuary. The transition from Earth-bound to Star-bound is most physical during "Space Station Sanctuary." Here, the duo uses masterful dynamic panning to create physical momentum; a rhythmic, high-pitched pulse begins to accelerate, traveling
from the left channel to the right like a vessel breaking orbit and receding into the distance.
By the time we reach "Space Song," with its "whale song" echoes and interstellar sound effects, the listener has left the Earth behind to sing a new song for the void. Yet, the journey concludes on a surprisingly positive note. "Undetectable Energy" offers a peaceful dialogue between two soaring synths that sound like birds flying free beyond the rim, leading finally to "Zodiacal Light." Ending on an uplifting "space groove,"
the album brings the listener back to solid ground, marveling at a journey that utilized every corner of the stereo field to bridge the gap between the deep-sea origins of life and the faint, dusty glow of our solar system’s edge.
"Ultimately, Dino Pacifici and Brannan Lane have proven themselves to be a musical force to be reckoned with. Their joint effort on Imaginary Horizons 2 demonstrates a level of craft that only comes from years of dedicated exploration. Each of these twelve songs has been meticulously sculpted to serve a larger sonic narrative, showcasing a pair of musicians at the height of their creative powers. This isn't just an album to stream; it is a work to be owned and lived
with. Be sure to add this release to your purchase list—I’m certain you will find it well worth the investment to follow this duo wherever their horizons lead next."
