We Gape and We Are Healed:
A Sonic Journey of Restoration

The transition from rain to snow is rarely a silent affair; it is a shift in weight, a cooling of the spirit, and a quiet slowing of the world’s frantic pace. This sense of atmospheric transformation is perfectly mirrored in the collaborative efforts of Glacis (Scottish composer Euan Alexander Millar-McMeeken) and Swedish cellist Henrik Meierkord on their upcoming release, We Gape and We Are Healed. In a world increasingly dominated by digital perfection, this album stands as a raw, honest exploration of human vulnerability through the minimalist interplay of piano and cello.

The journey begins with "Desire Becomes Sorrow," where the piano and cello weave an introspective moment that feels like smoke rising from the smoldering ruins of yesterday’s burned bridges. There is a profound mourning in the notes, a realization that some paths are closed forever. The simplicity of the arrangement makes the loss feel more poignant; by stripping away the artifice, the artists allow the brooding, solemn emotions to speak directly to the listener. This reflection continues into "I Have Worshipped The Wrong Gods," a track that contemplates a life lived in service to misplaced goals.

The Split

It is not purely a song of loss, but rather a quiet, dignified sadness regarding paths not taken and regrets for time spent at the wrong altars.

As the album progresses, the atmosphere shifts toward a more meditative state. "Night Breathes On Me" offers a powerful emotional punch, providing a peaceful sanctuary for deep contemplation. It is as if the clarity of the night air allows the listener to finally see the things that surround them in this life without the distractions of the day. This "sonic journey" into the serene continues with "As The Sun Was Lost To Us." Here, Glacisand Meierkord capture the essence of a total absence of light, translating the feeling of being utterly lost into a beautiful, contemplative melody.

The midpoint of the album, "The Grey Sea Turns In Its Sleep," introduces a rhythmic repetition that mimics the timeless patterns of waves lapping against a cold shore. The piano plays a series of plaintiff notes that fade into empty silence, only for the cycle to begin again, while the cello makes a brief, plucked appearance that feels like a shifting tide. It is a masterful representation of nature’s indifference to our internal struggles, a sea that slumbers even as we face "The Loss of Light." In that namesake track, the intimacy of the music becomes subdued, grabbing the heart and evoking the specific, hollow ache that accompanies life’s hardest seasons.

However, the album does not leave the listener in the dark. A subtle shift toward restoration begins with "She Puts Her Hands On Me," where the piano takes a solo role that is tender, loving, and remarkably personal. It suggests a reconnection with that which was thought lost—a light in the darkness showing that restoration is possible. This burgeoning hope blooms fully in "Renewed In Bloom," where a violin seems to join the piano to create a warmer, more hopeful texture. It is the sound of life returning to a frozen garden, reminding us that we should never stop looking toward the positive future that lies ahead.

The experience concludes with "The Only Sound," bringing the journey to a close in a state of contented comfort. The creative strength of Glacis and Henrik Meierkord lies in their ability to play as one, translating inner visions into a palpable experience. The recording process has captured every tiny, exquisite nuance of their partnership, from the fragile MIDI-controlled piano compositions to the warm, human counterweight of the cello.

We Gape and We Are Healed is an essential listen for anyone who has ever found it difficult to open up or express the weight of their own history. It is an album that doesn’t ask to be decoded; it simply offers a space to exist, to breathe, and, eventually, to heal.
